AdventWord Online! Your Images, Your Prayers: A Worldwide Practice

AdventWord: Pray With Christians Around the World

Looking for inspiration in Advent? Look no further than AdventWord, a worldwide Advent practice, online!

#AdventWord is the world’s first crowd-sourced global Advent Calendar. The idea is simple: each day of Advent will have a word, such as Awaken or Trust. Participants are asked to pray over that word, and then respond with an image on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram. #AdventWord even encourages people to pray through their smartphones every day of Advent.

#AdventWord was established by the Society of Saint the Evangelist (SSJE) in 2014 in partnership with the Office of the Anglican Communion. In 2017, Virginia Theological Seminary joined as a production partner.

How To Participate

  1. Sign up here to receive the word of the day by email every morning in Advent. The email will include a beautiful image and short meditation to inspire you.
  2. Pray on that word. For example, if the word is Trust, ask God to increase your capacity to trust in God’s power.
  3. Take a picture during the day that connects to that word.
  4. Post your picture online to add it to the “Global Advent Calendar.” Use #AdventWord, plus #the word of the day. See below for posting tips.

Tips for Posting Your AdventWord Images

The best part of AdventWord is that people around the world can see your response image. Be sure to use hashtags! (Hashtags – words following the # sign –  are used on social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Hashtags are essentially a tagging and index system, collecting posts into a group.)

Twitter
Simply tweet your AdventWord picture and include two hashtags. The first hashtag should always be #adventword. The second hashtag will be the word of the day, such as #trust. As long as your Twitter account is public, the adventword.org website will find your tweet and add it to the global Advent calendar.

Instagram
Share your AdventWord image on Instagram. Simply share your picture and include two hashtags. The first hashtag should always be #adventword. The second hashtag will be the word of the day, such as #trust. As long as your IG account is public, the adventword.org website will “see” your image and add it to the global Advent calendar.

Facebook
Post your AdventWord image on your Facebook profile or page. Simply post your image and include two hashtags. The first hashtag should always be #adventword. The second hashtag will be the word of the day, such as #trust. Facebook has different privacy settings. If your posts are restricted to Facebook friends (or friends of friends), the adventword.org website will not “see” your post, even if it has the #adventword tag.
